About the Tomodachi Initiative: This program offers students a chance to deepen cross-cultural sensitivity and respect by experiencing another culture firsthand, while at the same time supporting ongoing recovery efforts in Tohoku. In the first phase of the exchange, JASSW will bring Japanese students from Fukushima University to Seattle, and the next year low-income students from Seattle will visit Tohoku. On both trips, students will learn about JASSW’s “Shout Out to Japan!” events, participate in Japan/America in a Suitcase school visits, and tour businesses and fun sites the cities they are visiting. Our itinerary is jam-packed with exciting events for the Japanese students, including a Mariners game, tours to Microsoft and Boeing, visiting Seattle area school classrooms, and, of course, shopping and personal time with host families.
