Aerospace systems engineer at Blue Origin / Lead mixologist at InterContinental Hotel Bellevue

Marie Yoshimizu, originally from Okayama, Japan, is a rocket scientist by day and an award-winning mixologist by night. She is currently an aerospace systems engineer at Blue Origin, where she has worked for three years. A graduate of Wichita State University with a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering, she previously held roles in the automotive industry in Kansas and Michigan, using her skills in Japanese language, engineering, and project management. In 2020, during the global pandemic, she discovered a passion for mixology. What began as a home hobby quickly evolved into a serious pursuit, and today she is an accomplished and award-winning mixologist.

In the speaker session, Marie will share her inspiring career journey and give a behind-the-scenes look at the recent New Shepard NS-31 launch.

Flow Cytometry Manager – Cell Therapy Lab, Fred Hutch Cancer Center

Alexis Fujinari is a 4th generation Japanese American (Yonsei). She is a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist and Specialist in Cytometry with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). After obtaining her degree in Medical Technology from the University of Washington, she spent over 10 years with UW Medicine, performing diagnostic testing for patients with leukemias and lymphomas. She recently began a new role at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center as their Flow Cytometry Manager. She has been tasked with establishing and growing FHCC’s clinical flow cytometry services from the ground up.

Alexis will share how growing up in the Japanese American community led her to a challenging and fulfilling career in the clinical laboratory.

Following our STEM presentations, Marie will step into the spotlight in her “night job.” Recently named a Top 30 finalist in the 2025 World Class bartending competition, Marie brings the same precision and passion from her work as an aerospace systems engineer into the art of mixology.

In this fast-paced, space-inspired speed round, she’ll craft six unique cocktails—each one a tribute to a member of the historic NS-31 all-woman spaceflight crew. This isn’t just a cocktail demo—it’s a celebration of science, storytelling, and boundary-breaking women.

All guests will have a chance to sample Marie’s handcrafted creations. A selection of mocktails will also be available for non-alcoholic options.
