Have you heard of the Japanese phrase, “一期一会 (ichi go ichi e)”? It is often used to explain tea ceremonies: each tea gathering is unique and never to be experienced again. Embrace the spirit of ichi go ichi e with JASSW as we celebrate Japan’s intangible cultural heritage of washoku! Enjoy a cha-kaiseki bento from Chef Hiro Tawara, specially made to compliment the tea ceremony. While you feast on Japanese delicacies, enjoy presentations from Keiko Tanaka of the Chado Urasenke Tankokai Seattle Association and Yu Ugawa from Kimono Art as they educate us on the art of the tea ceremony and how manners, cuisine, dress, and drink are all inextricably intertwined in the cha-ji.
Featuring: sake tasting by Cedar River Brewing Company
Keiko Tanaka has studied the Urasenke Tradition of Tea for almost 40 years—in Japan, Boston, New York City, and Seattle. With her tea name of Sokei, she has been a Board of Directors member of Chado Urasenke Tankokai Seattle Association since 2005 and the Chief of Administration of the Association since 2015.
Yu Ugawa is the head instructor of a kimono school and has presented kimono shows in various locations. She has given her presentations on kimono at the Seattle Japanese Garden, the Seattle Asian Art Museum, and the Yukata Show at the Japan Fair 2016 in Bellevue Meydenbauer Center.
Hiro Tawara has over 20 years of experience in kaiseki, Japanese traditional multi-course cuisine. After working in some of the top Japanese restaurants in Kyoto and Seattle, Chef Tawara started WA’S Kitchen. In his quest to spread kaiseki, he hosts monthly “The Beauty of Kaiseki” demonstration kitchens.
