Organization Description

The Japan-America Society of the State of Washington is a certified 501c3 non-profit that serves Washington State. The Society’s mission is to promote mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of Japan and Washington State by providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and information.

Today, the Society maintains a diverse membership of Japanese and American corporations and individuals from throughout the state and provide varied programs that build positive U.S.-Japan relations. The Society is one of 38 independent members of the National Association of Japan-America Societies.

The Japan-America Society maintains a small professional staff.  Responsibilities sometimes change depending on workload.  Each member of the team contributes to the work of the others as needed. 

  • Office hours: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
  • Work hours may vary due to JASSW events (JIS visits and other events occur sometimes after 5pm and on weekends)
  • Lunch Break: One hour unpaid (when regular hours are the same as full office hours)
  • Paid break: One 10-minute break
  • You will be required to help with any events scheduled on your work date (e.g. set-up/clean-up) unless executive director (ED) specifies otherwise.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Japan In the Schools Coordinator (49%)
    • Coordinating school visits between visit leaders, volunteers, and teachers
    • Managing and heading training sessions for student groups and volunteers
    • Managing the Japan In the Schools website
    • Posting email announcements
    • Recruiting and managing volunteers
    • Handling and recording finances and materials
    • Updating presentation content and volunteer manuals
    • Presents the lessons JIS provides all year round to students of various age
  • America In the Schools Coordinator (1%)
    • Heading training sessions with Japanese student groups
    • Managing the America In the Schools website
  • Event Management (20%)
    • Database management
      • Members list, events calendar, program registrants/payments
    • Creating marketing materials for upcoming events (flyers, emails, social media)
    • Manage event webpages
    • Write blog posts about events that have occurred
    • Attend and manage the booth at community events
    • Community Outreach
      • Attending and staffing booths at community events such as Japan Fair, Seattle Cherry Blossom Festival, and Sakura Con
      • Making monthly community newsletters about community events
      • Manage all social media accounts and post about internal and community news
    • Fundraising Management (20%)
      • Procure about 200 individual items for an auction
      • Enter donor, donation item, and buyer info into Maestrosoft (auction software)
      • Manage a successful silent auction room of about 100 items
    • Intern Manager (10%)
      • Hire, train, and manage interns
      • Assign duties and responsibilities

JASSW Staff Requirement

  • Eligible to work legally in the United States
  • Able to drive in the State of Washington / Own or have access to a car
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software
  • Knowledge of modern office management systems and resources
  • Understanding of basic bookkeeping principles
  • Exceptional accuracy and follow through on all tasks and projects
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks
  • Positive personality and “can-do” attitude
  • Ability to work with little supervision, professional demeanor.

Desirable Attributes

  • Business level proficiency in both Japanese and English
  • Experience living, working, or traveling in Japan
